The Men’s Travel Clothes I Pack No Matter Where I’m Going

Much of my kit costs more than I’d prefer to pay if I were using these clothes only for travel. But it’s easier to justify spending on pieces that work equally well in my daily wardrobe at home. For example, $200 jeans are expensive by any measure, but they’re worth the investment if they can replace an entire drawer’s worth of pants—which they do. And I’d rather spend $20 on one pair of wool socks backed by a lifetime replacement guarantee than pay $12 for a pack of cotton socks that last only a year.

In addition to the clothes below, I’ll add a blazer and a button-down to pass the dress code at a nice restaurant, or an extra coat for colder places, but this is what I pack regardless of my destination.

A looped video of a pair of hands packing all the products mentioned in this guide into a small packing cubeVideo: Michael Hession

One T-shirt for all climates

The writer, wearing a shoulder bag and the t-shirt and jeans mentioned in this guidePhoto: Michael Hession

Icebreaker Sphere Short Sleeve Crewe ($70)

Merino T-shirts are great for travel because they wick sweat and resist odor naturally. I can easily wear the same tee for two or three days between washes. However, compared with synthetic fabric, pure merino dries slowly and can feel a bit itchy against bare skin. Icebreaker’s Sphere Short Sleeve Crewe tee combines the best of both worlds by blending 52 percent merino fiber with 48 percent synthetics (a mix of Tencel for smoothness and nylon for strength). The resulting shirt is softer to the touch, faster to dry, and more durable than pure-merino tops of comparable weight. I bought my first Sphere in 2014, and it still looks nearly new today—aside from a faded neck tag—whereas pure-merino shirts I’d bought from Icebreaker and Smartwool before discovering the Sphere developed small holes within a year or two.

Desert-island jeans

Outlier Slim Dungarees ($200)

If I found myself stranded on a desert island with only the clothes on my back, I would count myself lucky if I happened to be wearing Outlier’s Slim Dungarees. Rather than cotton denim, these dungarees are made from Workcloth: a nylon blend that combines the soft feel and durability of stonewashed denim with the stretchiness, breathability, and water and odor resistance of a technical fabric. The resulting garment performs like a hiking pant yet can be dressed up easily with a blazer. And the jeans go from damp to dry in just a few hours. The only downside is that they feel uncomfortably tight when you first try them on—even in the correct size. But they break in for a comfortable, slim fit after just a few wearings. If you prefer a roomier cut, go one size up.

Shorts that go beyond the gym

The All Over shorts, a lightweight fabric in a simple, slim-cut designPhoto: Olivers

Olivers All Over Short ($70)

The Olivers All Over Short ranks among the few athleisure pieces I’ve tried that actually look good enough to wear outside of the gym. A slight taper to the leg gives these shorts a flattering fit—more of a chino-like silhouette. Further supporting that effect is the false fly, which adds style without chafe. The 7½-inch inseam is short enough to enable free movement in the gym but long enough to keep things modest around town. This pair is also water resistant, which helps it dry faster if called upon for an impromptu swim. One thing I’ve noticed, though: These shorts are not abrasion resistant enough to bike in regularly without pilling.

A jacket for all seasons

The writer, modeling the lightweight Patagonia parka / hoodie.Photo: Michael Hession

Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody ($250)

You can find warmer and lighter jackets than the Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody—which is why it’s not a pick in our guide to the best insulated jackets—but its design makes it all the more versatile when you’re on the move. Its combination of a polyester exterior (made of 100 percent recycled materials) with a DWR (durable water resistant) coating and breathable PrimaLoft Gold insulation (now made of 55 percent post-consumer recycled materials) feels silky smooth, like the inside of a sleeping bag after a long day of hiking. And the hood helps keep me warm on the coldest fall and spring nights. It’ll even get through winter so long as you wear a shell over it and a warm undershirt.

A travel-underwear bargain

The Uniqlo Airism Boxer Briefs, lightweight and slightly lustrous on a floorPhoto: Michael Hession

Uniqlo Airism Boxer Briefs ($10)

I’ve worn more comfortable boxer briefs, and I’ve tried faster-drying ones as well, but dollar for dollar, none can beat Uniqlo’s Airism Boxer Briefs—which is why they’re the budget pick in our guide to the best travel underwear. For the price of one pair of our best men’s boxer briefs, you can get two pairs of Airism briefs. This underwear resists odors and dries quickly, so you can comfortably wear a single pair for a few days in a row. If you’re willing to wash and swap nightly, you can travel indefinitely with just two pairs—although I always pack a third just in case.

Socks for life

The Darn Tough socks, ankle-length wool blend hiking socks on a stoolPhoto: Michael Hession

Darn Tough Light Hiker Micro Crew Light Cushion ($20)

I bought my first pair of Darn Tough Light Hiker Micro Crew Light Cushion socks in 2013, and in the time since I’ve worn through dozens of other socks, but that original pair looks just as good as the day I bought it. These socks feel a bit stiffer than other merino socks at the outset but break in nicely over time. You don’t have to take my word for it: Check out our full review of the best hiking socks, which came to the same conclusion after our tests of 18 different pairs.

Bonus: Always bring a towel

The Outlier Grid Linen Towel, a light woven towel rolled up on a tablePhoto: Michael Hession

Outlier Grid Linen Towel, size L ($60)

It doesn’t take much space to throw the large-size Outlier Grid Linen Towel into my bag—considering it’s about the size of a rolled up T-shirt, I barely notice it’s there. But it makes all the difference on those odd occasions when I arrive at my accommodations only to be confronted with mildewed or threadbare towels. Linen isn’t as fast-drying as the synthetic cloth of most pack towels, but it dries quicker than cotton without sacrificing the superior feel of natural fibers. The Grid Linen is also great as a beach towel, and it can even serve as a blanket on trains and red-eye flights.

A fast-drying towel is also useful for drying clothes after hand-washing them in the sink. Rolling damp garments into it and wringing the whole thing out cuts drying times by hours. Using this method, I’ve traveled for weeks on end without having to visit a laundromat.

Best Travel Shoes 2019: These Shoes Were Made For Traveling

Best shoes for travel

Not all shoes are created equal. The editors at GearJunkie travel countless miles each year, researching stories, tackling adventures, and strategically packing our gear to make it all happen.

With permitted carry-on sizes getting smaller and smaller, we’re often parsing what to bring and what to leave behind. And nowhere does this become more relevant than when deciding which shoes to bring while traveling.

We’ve asked our editors what they look for in a travel shoe and compiled a short list of what we like this year in the travel shoe category.

The Right Stuff

Selecting the right shoe often starts by looking at your itinerary. Sure, running shoes are light and comfy, but they can flag you as a tourist (and potentially an easy target for theft). And because blisters are never stylish, a good travel shoe needs to provide all-day comfort, day after day.

Because form often follows function, we’ve listed the shoes we like best this season and categorized them by use. Here’s a look at some of our top picks.

Best Travel Walking Shoes

Merrell Sojourn Lace Travel Shoe

At just 4.5 ounces, these shoes are light. Add in the stretch knit upper and quick-draw elastic laces, and you’ve got a shoe built for travel. We found them comfortable right out of the box and happily wore them without socks. Feet will stay cool and supported whether taking in the city sights or hitting the trail.

Pros: Light, breathable, and built for summer travel.

Cons: Depending on your travel plans and personal style, they may be a bit too “athletic sneaker.” Especially for the fashionistas out there.

Bottom line: A solid choice for warm-weather travel, especially if you enjoy going sockless.

See Women’s

Bucketfeet Artistic Travel Shoes

Startup shoe brand Bucketfeet is wearable art that engages a community of 40,000 artists to license designs on canvas sneakers. Releases are small and rotate often, ensuring fresh designs are always available. The shoes are handmade to order, with designs printed on a poly-blend canvas, manufactured and shipped directly from the factory. Bonus: They are surprisingly comfortable. One editor wore them while touring Ecuador and found them up to the task, whether exploring the city, hiking the mountains, or heading to the beach.

Pros: Walking art; you’ll be wearing designs that nobody else is likely wearing.

Cons: Lack durable support. Recommended hand-wash only.

Bottom line: If the world is your oyster, these shoes might be your canvas.

See Men’sSee Women’s

Scarpa has deep roots in Italian alpine cobblery and was one of the first to release an approach shoe, a shoe that walks comfortably but with sticky rubber for mild climbs. The Margarita bridges the gap in the other direction, bringing a walking shoe that’s “approachable” for city life. The suede outer rides comfortably over a cushioning EVA midsole, and the entire shoe is washed in a DWR coating, making it easy to clean off evidence of your excursions.

Pros: Distinct styling and fun colors bring a splash to your travel kit with out-of-the-box comfort.

Cons: The suede material doesn’t breathe well and may cause your feet to sweat in warmer climates.

Bottom line: Capably stylish, the Margaritas are versatile shoes capable of hitting the alps during the day and cooling their heels over a glass of sauvignon blanc in the evening.

See Men’s

Best Travel Running Shoes

Like the idea of a barefoot shoe but can’t get into the 10-finger thing? A few brands follow the minimal moniker, but with a more mainstream vibe. We brought Vivobarefoot’s Primus Trail FG to Nicaragua this spring as our pedestrian shoe on a bikepacking trip.

The shallow silhouette of the of the shoe is constructed from heat-treated synthetic mesh, which is then treated with a DWR coating, making it tough, breathable, and water resistant. The Primus Trail is cinched tight with a drawcord, keeping it snug on the run but still allowing easy on and off for airport security.

Pros: Minimal design with reasonable traction toes the line between a trail runner and a city walker. And it rolls up into a small package to stow away as a backup adventure shoe.

Cons: A removable padded insole takes the edge off the street (and chilly ground), but don’t expect this shoe to guard against rocky terrain. It’s minimalist, after all. Racking up miles immediately out of the box could lead you down a sorry road.

Bottom line: The wide toe box, paired with a low-to-the-ground profile, gives you a protracted grip on variable terrain.

See Men’sSee Women’s

Our friends at BikeRumor.com lay track all over the world to get their stories. Tyler Benedict weighed in on his favorite travel shoe, from Altra.

Knit uppers are taking over the lightweight running shoe category, but where the concept really shines is everyday use. It’s light, breathable, and stretchy, which makes it great on hot days. The real benefit for travelers, though, is that they stay snug enough for a morning jog but slip off (and back on) quickly when going through airport security.

Altra’s foot-shaped last means a wide toe box. It’s an aesthetic that can take a little getting used to, but that combined with their zero-drop outsole and adequate cushioning means lower back pain is a thing of the past. We used them for all-day walks around Rome, parking deck parkour sessions, and pretty much every flight we’ve been on since they arrived.

Pros: Lightweight, easy to get on and off without untying them, comfortable for long days of walking, good grip for pretending your an urban ninja, and very durable. And they dry quicker than most.

Cons: If you’re not used to a zero-drop shoe, transition slowly into running in them. And some people don’t care for the big footprint … until they try them on.

Bottom line: Altra’s foot shape, lack of arch support, and zero drop take a couple days to get used to. But we’ve converted everyone we’ve ever recommended them to, bar none. The stretchy knit upper and nearly an inch of padding makes them a great, comfy travel partner.

See Men’sSee Women’s

Allibirds Runners Travel Shoes

Gone are the days of itchy wool. With the use of New Zealand merino wool, Allbirds presents the temperature-regulating, odor-minimizing awesomeness of wool in a soft, flexible, and outrageously comfortable package.

These lightweight shoes will easily pack into your carry-on and will quickly become your favorite adventure shoe. I’ve worn a pair for well over a year — as hikers in the woods, as end-of-day camp slippers, and as daily around-town sneakers. They’re still going strong and look just as good as they did on day one. And their flexible, form-fitting design makes them especially great driving shoes and an excellent choice for epic road trips.

Pros: Wool regulates temperature, breathes, and minimizes odors. Wear these with or without socks and enjoy all-day comfort.

Cons: If you’re used to extra cushion and extreme arch support, the Allibird’s more casual design might not work for you.

Bottom line: It’s a long-lasting, uber-comfortable sneaker that stays stink-free and easily transitions from the gym to a night on the town.

See Men’sSee Women’s

Xero Prio Most Packable Travel Running Shoe

This minimalist shoe could easily become your new favorite for running, walking, lifting, and traveling. The wide toe box gives your feet plenty of room to spread out, and the 5.5-mm rubber sole gives just enough cushion while still remaining outrageously light and packable. And if you need a bit more, you can always add in the optional 2-mm insole. The Prio does seem to run small, so consider ordering a half-size up.

Pros: Breathable, lightweight, and versatile.

Cons: If you prefer an extremely cushioned running shoe, this might not be for you.

Bottom line: It’s a lightweight, minimalist shoe that packs down impressively small.

Best Travel Hiking Shoes

Growing up in Portland in the ’80s, a pair of lightweight Cordura-slash-leather hikers from Danner was the de rigueur gear of every student. That, and a JanSport backpack. Times have changed, but the old is renewed in Danner’s venerable lightweight hiker. With new leather, lighter materials, and better traction, it’s back and better than ever. Just like “Star Wars” — excluding Episode I.

Pros: The flexible sole and lighter materials won’t weigh you down after a long day in the city. The Jags are completely waterproof to boot.

Cons: Being a boot, the Jag takes a little while to break in. (But once that’s done, it’s a trusted trail companion.) They’re on the lighter side for pure backpacking.

Bottom line: Pull the pastel collars up and bring out the Ray Bans! The Jags will rock your wet-weather travels.

Topo Athletic Terraventure - Best Travel Hiking Shoes

Whether logging miles on the trail, seeing the sights, or running on rugged terrain, the Terraventure will get you there comfortably. The cushioning on the heel prevents slippage while still allowing for agile movement. And the wide toe box gives plenty of room for feet to spread out. Add in the flexible rock plate, and you’ve got a shoe ready to tackle nearly any adventure you can dream up.

Pros: Good traction, comfortable padding in toe and heel, and enough style to easily transition from backcountry trail to city tour.

Cons: Can hold water and dries slowly if submerged.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a do-all shoe, the Terraventure is a strong contender. Tackle the trail and head out on the town without ever changing your shoes.

Urban Travel Shoes

The brand that defined the river sandal is all grown up now, with a line of refined, city-wise shoes. Not straying too far from the sandy shoals, the Thompson is Chaco’s interpretation of the venerable desert boot. We like the look of the soft, buttery leather riding over the whitewall and airy soles found on the Thompson Chukka.

Pros: Lightweight and supportive, the Thompson’s simple lines bring an element of subtle class to your travel kit. It’s the little things, like the stitching and the Achilles notch on the cuff, that class this shoe up like it was sewn by hand.

Cons: The Thompson is a fair-weather boot. Wet weather and snow? You’ll want to look elsewhere.

Bottom line: Lawrence of Arabia would have proudly rocked these kicks at any teahouse.

Lems Boulder Boot for women

If you’re after a light and fashionable minimalist boot that rolls up to the size of a water bottle, fits like a glove, and still offers plenty of wiggle room in the toe box, then look no further. The Boulder Boot has a zero drop and is a barefoot design. The outer material is made out of full-grain leather, and the inner liner is 100 percent cotton. Previously, traveling light meant foregoing boots, but the Boulder Boot has changed that. Check out our full review here.

Pros: Oh so packable.

Cons: The minimalist design might not offer the support you’re after.

Bottom line: Boots that roll up to the size of a water bottle. It’s like magic for your feet.

Best Travel Sandals

Astral Rosa Travel Sandals

Looking for a flip-flop that can easily transition into a full sandal? Let us introduce you to the Rosa. Known for making paddle-friendly gear, North Carolina-based Astral knows how to make a shoe that provides all-day comfort, traction, and durability. The dual density rubber pods on the bottom will keep you from slipping in even the wettest conditions, and the varied color options match any style.

Pros: Light, comfortable, and easy to slide on and off.

Cons: Rocks can get underfoot, and the open design doesn’t provide a lot of toe protection.

Bottom line: If you want the ease of a flip-flop and the utility of a sandal, this shoe could become your favorite travel companion.

See Men’sSee Women’s

Teva Voya Infinity Travel Sandal

These sandals have a pillowy-soft topsole and just enough style to comfortably wear wherever your travels may take you. The webbing is extremely durable and dries quickly. And our editors found the adjustable webbing design provided plenty of support while easily adjusting to a variety of foot shapes.

Pros: Adjustable webbing allows for a custom fit. Extreme comfort paired with a hefty dose of style.

Cons: May not stand up to heavy hikes or extreme wear.

Bottom line: Choose these if you’re looking for the classic comfort of a Teva with fashion-forward design, all for less than 50 bucks.

See Women’s

Durable style – Pikolinos Antillas Walking Sandal: $195

Pikolinos Best Women's Travel Sandal

Sure, these look way too nice for adventure travel. But hear us out. Our editor swears by them and has worn a pair for years on end — living out of an old VW van, hiking in Ecuador, traveling across Cyprus. You name it, these sandals have done it. (The pictured pair is going on two years’ constant daily use and has never lost a single bead). Made by Spanish brand Pikolinos and hand-beaded by the Massai tribe of East Africa, these leather sandals are built to last.

Pros: Comfortable enough for hiking, stylish enough for any city pursuit.

Cons: The leather can dry out if worn in water often.

Bottom line: If you want an all-day sandal but don’t want to give up on style, this is a winner.

See Women’s

Merrell Travel Sandal

Complete with a cork footbed and air cushion pillow in the heel, your feet will thank you for traveling with these sandals. The adjustable strap allows for a snug fit over your arch, and the grip technology on the sole provides plenty of traction. And at just 5.9 ounces, we can’t believe how light and comfortable these are.

Pros: Soft, padded sole provides all-day comfort.

Cons: Some people simply dislike “big toe loops” on their sandals.

Bottom line: From beach excursions to around-town adventures, these sandals are soft, easy to clean, and super cute.

Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2019

Testing Mens Travel Pants in Columbia

When hitting the road (or the terminal), travelers need pants that are packable and versatile. Travel clothing needs to be just as capable of tackling a hike while looking sharp enough to stroll a museum or enjoy a fancy restaurant.

From the Andean cloud-forests to deep desert canyons and high mountain peaks, as well as more everyday scenarios (read: punching the keyboard at work), we traveled the world testing pants.

While comfort is key, we also need to be able to happily go out in public. We chose travel pants that look as good as they feel and don’t shout “tourist.” Clean lines, darker colors, and traditional styling help you blend into crowds and stay off the would-be pickpocket’s radar.

Look for deep, horizontal jean-style pockets that prevent keys and change from accidentally rolling out. No joke, one pair of pants we tested (that’s not on this list) spit a wallet out at work without us even knowing it. A hidden zipper pocket can inconspicuously secure a passport or wallet.

And while we love denim, we look for performance fabrics that can withstand repeated washings in a sink, line dry overnight, and stay wrinkle-free after weeks on the go.

Best Overall Travel Pants

Functionally stylish but with a little give in the weave, the Evolution is a stylish slim pant launched with the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Note: The Evolution is on sale for $112 (25% off) until May 31.

At the core of the pant is the nylon-elastane-blend material with a traditional jean-like cut. The nylon fibers are softened by running them through an “air-texturized” process and then woven into a dynamic yarn. The material has a durable weave that mimics denim (and is less like khaki). The DWR coating is outstanding and kept us dry while standing in a downpour, waiting to catch a funicular to the top of Bogotá.

Reach around back and you’ll find a double pocket on the right, with a hidden zipper pocket that’s large enough to swallow your passport. Western Rise expanded the front coin pocket and made it large enough holster an iPhone 8.

We received an early release of the pant. In the short time since the Evolution’s official release, it has received an overwhelmingly positive rating by buyers. We have to agree. It was the envy of a photographer we traveled with through Colombia and became a favorite.

Fabric: Supplex (96 percent nylon, 4 percent elastane), woven in Sweden, cut and sewn in the USA
Fit: True to size
Weight: 13 ounces
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: For travelers who prefer jean styling but don’t want to compromise performance fabric

Price: $112

Best Budget Travel Pants

These lightweight pants are a steal at just $30 (or less depending on the size and color combination). These chino pants come in four colors: charcoal, navy, black, and khaki. And for being such a bargain, they work surprisingly well. The nylon-spandex blend offers just enough stretch for a full range of motion, and we like how quick-drying they are.

And with a DWR coating and UPF of 50, you could even wear these hiking. They probably won’t last as long as other higher-quality pants on our list, but if you’re looking for a budget pair of travel pants, these are it.

Fabric: 94 percent nylon, 6 percent spandex
Fit: True to size
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: Cheapest pants on this list; a lightly stretchy, quick-drying bargain

Price: $30
See the Rainier Travel Chinos

Best Adventure Travel Pants

Anyone planning the ultimate adventure travel getaway should check out these pants. They can handle climbing, hiking, biking, camping, and city sightseeing with ease and style. It’s no wonder they’re a perennial favorite. Year after year, review after review, the Stretch Zion — like its canyon namesake — stands the test of time.

The Zion is woven from a nylon-spandex blend that has a forgiving flex and just enough protection to deflect chaparral and granite.

A clever integrated belt buckle sits offset from the fly and out of an overlaying harness belt. And two angled cargo pockets silhouette the legs to holster a map or phone.

At the cuffs, prAna placed a clever set of snaps that allows you to roll and snap the legs up and out of the way for better footwork visibility.

They’re also available in shorts ($69) and convertible pants ($60-95).

Fabric: 97 percent nylon, 3 percent spandex
Fit: True to size
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: Styled for climbing but great on the trail and can pass for the city without looking like you walked off the Camel Trophy series. A do-all pair of pants.

Price: $89
See the Stretch Zion Pants

Best of the Rest

Built as the ultimate travel pant, the Commuter Pant does it all. The breathable fabric handles temperature swings like a champ, and you can rest easy knowing you’ll stay wrinkle-free even on the red-eye.

The articulated knee makes sitting on a plane (or in a car) that much more comfortable. There’s a pocket for your phone, and the zippered rear pocket keeps your wallet secure. These wash up great and can be comfortably worn from sunup to sundown through all manner of travel excursions. Rhone even offers free hemming so you can ensure a perfect fit.

Fabric: Japanese stretch fabric
Fit: True to size
DWR: No
Bottom line: Look like slacks, feels like sweats; comfortable, stylish, and durable

Price: $128
See the Commuter Pant

NYC brand Outlier scours the market in search of new and innovative fabrics to separate themselves from the crush of athleisure glutting today’s market.

The Future Works pant is sewn from high-tenacity nylon — similar as found in the Western Rise Evolution — that has been softened through an air-texturized process. The yarns are woven into a durable khaki that looks sharp, remains durable, and is extremely breathable.

The yarns have a little give that, when sewn with a gusseted construction and a looser fit, provide wide freedom of motion and plenty of breathing room for the legs while exploring ruins in hot, humid climes.

Sporting five pockets, we wished the Futureworks had at least one that zipped shut. But the pockets are deep, and it’s the material and breathability that put the Futureworks pant on our list. It’s our favorite pant for traveling light near the equator.

Fabric: 97 percent nylon, 3 percent elastane, woven in Sweden
Fit: True to size
Weight: 13 ounces
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: For equatorial travelers looking for a breathable, khaki-style pant

Price: $148

Britain-based Rohan has quickly become a GearJunkie favorite and shines on journeys that require light, packable gear but still holds its own while out on the town.

The Escapers are an athletic-fit tech khaki with deep pockets and two zippers. The right back pocket zips shut and a second, sorta hidden zippered pocket rides up front, inside the front left pocket. Both are deep enough to stow cash and a passport safely away from sticky fingers.

We stuffed a pair in our bikepacking kit to wear out of the saddle in Colombia and found the material stood up to the stiff South American humidity. More impressively, it bounced back from repeated crushing in our bag between hotel stays.

Perhaps best of all, the pants dry exceptionally fast. Wash ’em, wring ’em, hang ’em, and they are dry by morning.

The material stretches a bit but without feeling like you’re wearing much Lycra. The knees are sewn with a stitch to help increase articulation. Though we wouldn’t call the Escapers a hiking pant, the fit and material allow the trouser to cross over into more athletic adventures and with better styling than your dad’s closet ever saw.

Fabric: 94 percent polyamide, 6 percent elastane
Fit: True to size
Weight: 10 ounces
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: Best travel khaki in the lineup

Price: $100
See the Escapers Pants

Our friend Tyler Benedict at Bikerumor spends nearly 50 percent of his time traveling. He’s been wearing Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro Pants for years, estimating they’ve logged more than four trips around the sun and have become his go-to travel pants.

Tyler shared, “They’re lightweight, breathable, comfortable, have well-placed pockets, and they stretch with my movement. Their two-way-stretch Flexion material has just enough movement to take on everything from parkour over ruins to strenuous hiking.”

The two zippered cargo pockets are flush with the pants, avoiding the militarized look of gusseted external pockets. They’re angled for easy access and fit the largest iPhone with a case, which is a nice bonus (not all cargo pants and shorts can claim this anymore).

They have a DWR treatment that holds up over time, and there are 10 colors to choose from, all running $80. But like they say about the weather, if you don’t like the price, just wait 5 minutes. Eddie Bauer runs its entire site at 40-50 percent off just about every other month. And the brand has a lifetime guarantee, which makes these pants an incredibly good value.

Fabric: 94 percent nylon, 6 percent spandex
Fit: Athletic; true to size
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: Durable travel pant for adventure-seeking travelers

Price: $80
See the Guide Pro Pants

We love denim, but cotton wefts are heavy, lack stretch, and don’t pack down well. And, most importantly, the traditional shallow jean pocket is too easy to pull a wallet out of.

Aviator was born out of the soul for denim with a passion for travel. The brand’s Concorde has seven pockets, including three that zip. Each back pocket has a hidden hanging pocket, large enough to fit a passport. The front left pocket has a third hidden zipper pocket. All pocket zippers use a nylon YKK zipper, so you don’t have to worry about inviting a TSA patdown.

The Concorde comprises a summer-weight cotton blend that is soft to the touch and has a little give. It won’t dry as fast as the other synthetic pants on the list, but it’s supremely comfortable and can walk out of coach into your port of entry in style.

Fabric: 45 percent lyocell, 27 percent cotton, 15 percent rayon, 12 percent poly, and 1 percent spandex
Fit: True to size, offered in slim and straight.
Weight: 20 ounces
DWR: Yes
Bottom line: For those who can’t leave home without a pair of jeans

Price: $125

Best U.S. Music Festivals

SXSW 2017

SXSW 2017

SXSW

March 9–18, Austin, TX

The first SXSW was held in 1987 and since then the festival has grown both in terms of attendance—by some counts, 300,000 people will attend this year’s 10-day festival—and in terms of influence: SXSW is Austin’s biggest revenue-producing event and one of the most important gatherings on the nation’s entertainment calendar. The event is broken down into SXSW Music (with 2,000-plus acts performing across the city); SXSW Film (with screenings of anticipated movies, panels and workshops); and the increasingly popular SXSW Interactive, which features speakers, panels and pitch competition, SXSW Accelerator.

Big Ears

March 22–25, Knoxville, TN

Named for the open-minded approach to listening it asks attendees to have, Big Ears regularly hosts marquee contemporary classical music performances along with adventurous indie-rock, jazz, metal and electronic music. To list genres is almost anti-thetical to the spirit of the festival, which recognizes no such distinction in its omnivorous bookings. For four days, Big Ears transforms the city into a paradise for music of all kinds, taking over regal music halls, intimate clubs and hushed churches, all of which are centrally located and within walking distance. The 2018 edition includes sets by free-jazz titan Roscoe Mitchell, electronic-music maker Four Tet and thrillingly inventive singer Diamanda Galás .

More than 100, 000 music lovers make a pilgrimage to the Empire Polo Club during each identical weekend of Coachella, whether bound for campgrounds or shuttling over from golf resorts and mid-century modern homes. Though its bespoke dining experiences and hotel party scene may try to steal headlines, Coachella remains about the relaxed desert air euphoria of a well-curated music festival. The Weeknd, Beyoncé and Eminem top this year’s lineup, with more sets from SZA, St. Vincent, Haim, Kygo and Miguel.

Levitation

April 26–29, Austin, TX

Formerly known as Austin Psych Fest, Levitation has become one of the key components of the Austin festival scene, celebrating the psychedelic sounds of the ’60s and the evolution of experimental rock. This weekend-long bacchanal is all about boundary-pushing and musical expression. This year welcomes shoegaze standouts Slowdive, garage-rock prodigy Ty Segall and Animal Collective popster Panda Bear.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

April 27–May 6, Fair Grounds Race Course, New Orleans, LA

One of the country’s longest-running music festivals, held annually since 1970, Jazz Fest is also one of the biggest. Nearly half a million people showed up last year to take in a massive bill of jazz, blues, rock and roots music. While most festivals are content to book the same handful of reunited alt-rock bands making the rounds, Jazz Fest always boasts hall of fame caliber headliners, who in the past have included Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Steely Dan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

FORM Arcosanti

May 11–13, Arcosanti, AZ

When the electropop group Hundred Waters decided to launch their own festival they looked to the cookie-cutter fests they’d spent years playing as inspiration for what not to do. FORM Arcosanti brings together acts that have influenced the band—vets include Skrillex, postrock veterans Tortoise and funk bassist Thundercat—to play at an experimental “urban laboratory” in central Arizona surrounded by surreal, retro-futurist architecture.

Moogfest

May 17–20, Durham, NC

The late engineer and inventor Bob Moog did more than any other single person to put electronic synthesizers into artists’ hands and listeners’ ears, and in the process he helped to reshape the entire language of modern music. Held near the headquarters of the instrument company that still bears his name, this annual tribute to his legacy shows off the range of uses people have come up with for his instruments, from the crowd-pleasing to the more challengingly experimental. This year’s fest features sets by neo-soul singer Jamila Woods and avant-pop act Fatima Al Qadiri, and a rare performance by Japanese composer Midori Takada,

Hangout Music Festival

May 18–20, Gulf Shores, AL

One of the more unlikely success stories in the festival business, this festival right on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico had the bad luck to launch in the midst of 2010’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill, but it hung in there and grew big enough to get bought up by the company that puts on Coachella. The Hangout lineup leans heavy on energetic indie, electronic and pop acts that fit the beach-party vibe.

May 25–17, Gorge Amphitheatre, George, WA

To paraphrase an old tourist slogan, Sasquatch! is gorge-ous. The lineup lives up to the Pacific Northwest’s reputation for refined musical tastes. Past years brough cultish veterans like Four Tet and the Digable Planets mingling with cutting-edge tastemakers like Savages and Shamir. One of the major draws is being able to see a band as good as the Cure alongside a sweeping view of the lush Columbia Gorge canyon.

Top 100 Events in the United States 2019

Whether it’s revealing industry innovations at trade shows, gathering celebrities for glitzy award shows, or hand-selecting attendees for exclusive business conferences, the top events in the United States have clear purposes and deliver experiences that impressed, engaged, and thrilled guests in attendance and watchers from afar.

Sometimes quite afar: With appeal that spans the globe, gatherings as varied as the Super Bowl, New Year’s Eve in Times Square, the Oscars, and the State of the Union Address were broadcast and streamed to millions of viewers worldwide.

New additions on this year’s list span several industries. With citywide festivals that welcome thousands of fans, the impact of the N.B.A. All-Star Game and the N.F.L. Draft extends beyond their sports. Fiesta San Antonio generates hundreds of millions of dollars for its hometown each year, and Burning Man has evolved from a casual beach party into one of the most immersive art experiences in the world. The innovative Code Conference gathers the tech world’s game-changers, and the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner is a must-attend event for politicians.

To choose and rank the annual events on this list, we look at several factors, including economic impact, buzz, innovation, and an event’s prominence within the communities it intends to serve.
